Usually, yes. Many glass pool gate hinge systems require pre-drilled holes or shaped cut-outs, and the exact layout must match the hinge model.
The important part is when those holes are made: they must be prepared before the glass is toughened. You cannot buy a finished toughened glass panel and drill it later to turn it into a gate.
Here is what to check when choosing a new glass pool gate or replacing existing hinges.

Atlantic hinges and matching glass
The Atlantic 530 soft-close hinge is listed for 10mm and 12mm glass and Polaris 125 glass cut-outs. Choose the glass-to-glass or glass-to-wall version to suit your layout, then check the matching gate preparation and the model’s gate-size and weight limits.
Why glass pool gates have holes or cutouts
Pool gate hinges need a compatible fixing arrangement to connect the moving gate to a fixed glass panel, wall or post. Depending on the hardware, the glass may need round holes, shaped edge cut-outs or a combination of features.
Master Range gates use round holes
For example, the Master Range 8mm glass pool gate is supplied with six pre-drilled 10mm holes for compatible hinge and latch hardware. These are not six hinge holes: the gate preparation accommodates both types of hardware.
Other systems use a different glass preparation. The 12mm Polaris glass pool gate is designed for the compatible soft-close hinge options listed on its product page.
Match the Master Range gate with the specified Master Range hinge set and compatible supporting panel. Its round-hole layout differs from the shaped edge cut-outs used by the Polaris 125 and Atlantic 530 systems discussed here. Do not assume these preparations are interchangeable.

Check the fixed hinge panel too
For a glass-to-glass installation, check both pieces of glass:
- The gate panel is the moving section.
- The hinge panel is the fixed section supporting the hinges.
The Master Range 12mm hinge panel is supplied pre-drilled for its compatible hardware. Other ranges use their own cut-out arrangements.
A matching gate alone is not enough if the supporting hinge panel has the wrong preparation. Check glass thickness, hole positions and cut-out shape on both sides of the hinge.
For a glass-to-wall or glass-to-post installation, the supporting connection changes, but the gate glass must still match the selected hinge. Do not assume a glass-to-glass gate and a wall-mounted gate are interchangeable.
See the cutouts in the glass itself
The image below shows the glass gate before the hinges are fitted. The two shaped openings on the left edge are the hinge cut-outs. The two small round holes on the opposite side are for the latch hardware.

Shop Polaris gates and hinges
Choose the correct mounting version of the Polaris 12mm glass gate, then match it with Polaris 125 glass-to-glass hinges or Polaris 125 glass-to-wall hinges.
For glass-to-glass layouts, check the Polaris / Atlantic hinge panel as well as the gate. Confirm the selected model’s glass thickness, cut-out layout, gate size and weight limits. A matching brand name alone does not confirm every part is compatible.

These original shop drawings show different preparations for the two Atlantic 530 mounting types. They are reference illustrations, not scale templates or instructions to modify finished glass. Confirm the current manufacturer drawing for the exact hinge before glass is manufactured.

Atlantic latches and latch holes
The Atlantic 180-degree glass-to-glass latch in matt black is listed for our Polaris 12mm and Master Range 8mm gates. Its fixed latch panel does not need holes. That statement applies to the latch panel, not to the gate’s hinge holes or cut-outs.

For a different layout, browse our glass pool gate latches, including Atlantic wall/post and 90-degree options. Choose the correct configuration rather than relying on appearance alone.
Understand fittings that do not need holes
Some fixed-panel fittings use friction rather than holes through the glass. For example, our standard 12mm pool fence panels are supplied without holes for use with compatible friction-fit spigots.
That does not make them ready-made gate panels. Fixed-panel supports and gate hinges perform different jobs.
If you see “no holes required” on a fitting, check exactly which component and application that statement covers. Never assume it applies to the moving gate or the hinge connection.
Never drill finished toughened pool glass
Do not drill, cut, enlarge holes or alter hinge cut-outs in finished toughened glass. Toughened glass cannot be further cut or processed, as explained in glass processing guidance.
If your existing glass does not match the new hardware, find a hinge specifically confirmed to fit the existing preparation or replace the glass with the correctly manufactured panel. Do not try to modify the glass to make incompatible parts fit.
What to check before buying
Use this checklist when comparing glass pool gate hinges:
- Mounting type: glass-to-glass, glass-to-wall or the appropriate post connection.
- Glass thickness: confirm the permitted thickness for the gate and supporting panel.
- Glass preparation: compare the actual hole and cut-out layout with the hinge specification.
- Gate size and weight: check both against the selected hinge model’s limits.
- Opening allowances: include the specified hinge-side and latch-side gaps.
- Latch compatibility: check its fixing requirements separately from the hinges.
For replacement hinges, take clear photos and record the existing glass dimensions and hole layout before ordering.
Self closing and soft close are different features
Self-closing describes the gate returning to the closed position. Soft-close describes controlled movement that reduces slamming. A pool gate also needs a suitable self-latching arrangement.
For example, NSW pool safety guidance requires gates to self-close, self-latch and open away from the pool. Confirm the requirements applying to your property with your council or qualified pool barrier inspector. Matching hardware alone does not certify the complete installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a normal glass fence panel as a gate
Do not assume so. Choose a purpose-made gate with the preparation, thickness and dimensions required by its hardware. A hole-free fixed panel cannot be drilled after toughening.
Do all glass pool gate hinges use the same hole pattern
No. Different hinge systems can require different holes or cut-outs. Compare the exact model specifications, including the supporting hinge panel where applicable.
Can I replace spring hinges with soft close hinges
Sometimes. A retrofit hinge must be confirmed compatible with the existing glass preparation, thickness, gate size and mounting arrangement. “Retrofit” does not mean universal fit.
